Which Leadership Qualities Are Necessary to Generate
Organisational Success in Today’s Economy?
(Report Date: January 2003, Full Report: 19 pages)
Summary
This report identifies the leadership qualities and abilities that
are conducive to organisational success in the current business
environment, and describes in what way these qualities contribute
towards the bottom line results of an organisation.
There is a strong link between effective leadership and superior
business performance. Leadership skills are a major determinant
of business success and companies need to be aware of that fact
if they want to retain their competitive advantage in the market.
A recent benchmarking study found that leadership skills, leadership
development programmes, and selection and placement decisions have
a significant impact on the bottom-line figures of an organisation,
including revenue growth, productivity, profitability and market
value.
Unfortunately, it seems that many company leaders lack the necessary
skills to ensure continuous success for their company. It has been
estimated that around 40% of new managers fail within their first
18 months on the job.
To complicate matters further, the world economic downturn, the
September 11 attacks in the United States, and the current war against
terrorism have given rise to an increasingly uncertain business
environment which challenges traditional leadership models. Leaders
may therefore need to let go of old assumptions and make room for
new ways of doing things.
This report identifies the main leadership qualities and abilities
that are necessary to guide a company towards superior business
performance in today’s rapidly-changing business climate.
